Rodan + Fields Business Opportunity -The Direct Selling Business of the 21st Century

In a recent issue of Direct Selling News, Rodan + Fields story of being the first prestige skincare brand to leave the cosmetic and beauty counters of high end department stores further supported the rationale behind a successful brand moving into a direct selling business model successful entrepreneur and author Robert Kiyosaki calls "the Business of the 21st Century". The Rodan + Fields Dermatologists skincare line launched in high-end department stores in 2002 and quickly became a top seller. In 2003, The Estee Lauder Companies Inc. saw Rodan + Fields’ value and bought the prestige "dermatology at home" brand, which continued to expand its market. By all measures, Rodan + Fields exemplified success. So why did this company decide to pull its products from department stores and re-launch the brand as a direct sales company?

In my new favorite book "The Business of the 21st Century", successful millionaire entrepreneur Robert Kiyosaki and author of best-seller "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" objectively critiques the business of network marketing and explains the reasons why network marketing is the best way for the average person today to build a significant asset that will permit them to live and retire in freedom. He says of the Industrial Age financial success in the 20th century-- "get a good education, find a good job, work hard for forty years, invest in stocks and real estate, etc." -- no longer works in the Information Age of the 21st Century. Kiyosaki encourages "new entrepreneurs" determined to succeed in "The New Economy" that only network marketing offers all the benefits of a huge business, with none of the risk, expense, and complexity.

Direct selling/network marketing is a powerful business system that relies more on communication, leadership, and team-building skills than it does sales skills. It doesn't require a college education or large investment to build a six-figure (or higher) income. There is no glass ceiling. There is no need to abandon a J.O.B. to start a network marketing enterprise. And Happy 3rd Birthday to Victoria Skincare Rodan + Fields Blog!

It is my Rodan + Fields blog's third year anniversary and as I read back to my initial posts, I remember my first days in pre-launch with Rodan + Fields. I received a call from my best friend Dr. Kathy Fields and she told me how she and Katie Rodan were buying the company back from Estee Lauder and allowing independent business ownership to men and women who wanted to join them in the new direct selling company. She said "Vic, you've got to be one of the first. Over time, you can grow this as big as you want to- the sky's the limit." She talked about our family being able to fund our children's education and the ability to retire in the style that she knows I dream of.  Although our family's successful real estate business of over 20 years is well established, like many other small businesses, it is subject to downturns. So building a future asset and diversifying our income stream is being prepared, if not critical, to our plan for our future. The thought of being able to share my 25 years of business development experience to help others build financial security was exciting and being able to expand our charitable contributions, both in time and financially, was extremely gratifying to us. We also love to travel and my hobbies include all kinds of cultural and artistic interests, so the thought of the freedom to enjoy time with my family and to share these experiences with them is truly a wonderful thing.

The timing of Rodan + Fields direct selling business launch could not have been any better, at least for the lucky and hard working ground floor consultants who found themselves with a Plan B to grow wealth as the world started to slide into a devastating recession. As millions lost their jobs, 401k's and their homes, others looked to the possibility of independent business ownership to help recover lost income. Thousands of Rodan + Fields consultants have changed their lives in ways they could not have imagined and in the process done the same for others.

My blog of three years has hundreds of posts, videos and resources to learn about the Rodan + Fields business and my personal Rodan + Fields experiences.   I've been complimented as the "queen of social media" by my Rodan + Fields colleagues because of my pioneering with this form of "word of mouth" marketing and the first consultant who established an integrated marketing approach with Rodan + Fields. I certainly enjoy sharing my excitement about the Rodan + Fields business. Who wouldn't be. There are less than 10,000 active consultants in the entire U.S. and Rodan + Fields is on a vertical growth path, DEBT FREE, with MOMENTUM right around the corner. Rodan + Fields on Today Show: Best Anti-Aging Products For 2011 By Allure Magazine

Rodan + Fields Dermatologists AMP MD System and Anti-Age Regimen was featured this morning on the Today Show and was named a Best Anti-Aging Product of 2011 by Allure Magazine's Founder and Editor-in-Chief Linda Wells. More than half of all women aged 25 to 34 say they use anti-aging products on their face. The focus on the segment was anti-aging treatments at home that before you had to go to the dermatologist to obtain. Ms. Wells said "a lot of them originated in the dermatologists, they're milder forms so you don't have to have medical supervision to use. but it's this idea of being able to use these products at home and benefiting over time."

Rodan + Fields 2010 - President Bush Talks About Going From "Good to Great"

I thought I'd share an end of 2010 letter from Rodan + Fields President and General Manager Lori Bush with my readers:

"As 2010 comes to a close, it's time to take inventory ... not just of the number of regimens, AMP MD™ units and business portfolios in our warehouse, but of our progress towards our lofty vision of changing skin and changing lives as we redefine independent business ownership.

Those of you who know me, know of my affinity for business books. I'm the first one to admit that most of my "big ideas" are really repurposed concepts I've borrowed from industry gurus. So as we look back on this past year of impressive growth for Rodan + Fields® and pontificate on how we're set up for 2011 and beyond, there should be no surprise that I'm going to reflect on the teachings of Jim Collins and one of my favorite business bestsellers, "Good to Great". ...

One Big Thing
Great companies do not and, according to Jim Collins, should not try to be all things to all people. Rather, great companies can attribute their success to one big thing. (Collins refers to this as the hedgehog concept because the hedgehog has few impressive attributes except for one; when under attack, it can roll up into a perfect little ball of sharp spikes and thus generally prevail in the face of danger.) For companies, the one big thing happens at the intersection of three components: what you are deeply passionate about, what you can be the best in the world at, and what drives your economic engine. It's been suggested that it generally takes a company four or more years to really get to that level of introspection. I think we've nailed it in less than three ...

• What are we deeply passionate about: changing lives by redefining independent business ownership

• What we can be the best in the world at: skincare!

• What drives our economic engine: Average Executive Group / Personal Team Volume (1200 CV or more indicates that there is the duplication and leverage that leads to sustainable income).

In 2010, we worked with our R+F field leaders to develop and refine a new business opportunity presentation to help communicate the power of the Rodan + Fields products and brand in helping our independent business owners capture a significant share in the highly lucrative anti-aging skincare market...

Most importantly, we introduced new skincare products that are allowing our independent business owners to enjoy a bigger slice of the skincare market. AMP MD, as a component of the all new Anti-Age regimen, is creating outstanding results and new possibilities in skincare, attracting new customers and new Consultants alike. Greater customer acquisition, higher average orders, greater customer loyalty and more recruits add up to significantly increased Personal Team Volume.

A Culture of Discipline
The beauty of independent business ownership is that you are your own boss ... you control your hours, where you conduct business, who you choose as your team. The test results are in and they are good ... very good.
